Dental implants offer a permanent way of replacing missing teeth and restoring both appearance and function. Because they integrate seamlessly with your natural teeth physically and aesthetically, implants are considered by many to be the gold standard in tooth replacement.
The Dental Implant Process
The implant process takes place in several stages over a period of several months. In the initial phase, an incision is made in the gum tissue to allow for the installation of the titanium root replica in the jaw bone. The gum tissue is then closed over the titanium root and allowed 3-6 months to heal, during which time the titanium will fuse to the jaw bone in a process called osseointegration, creating an extraordinarily secure base. If needed, Dr. Shepherd will fit you for a temporary appliance called a flipper to wear during the healing period, allowing you to eat, drink, and speak normally while maintaining a pleasing aesthetic appearance.
Once your gums have healed and the titanium "root" has successfully fused, impressions of the implant top are taken. These impressions are sent to our trusted, high quality dental lab, which will create a custom abutment and crown for each tooth, which Dr. Shepherd will then attach permanently to complete your new smile. Your implant will feel, function, and look like your natural teeth, allowing you to enjoy all the foods, drinks, and activities you used to.
